Safe after Surgery?

I had a patient come in recently that had undergone 2 back surgeries. The first one was to trim off a bulging disc that was pinching his nerve and giving him severe pain down his leg. Two months later still no change in the pain so the surgeon decided to FUSE the bones together and put a metal plate and four 2 1/2 inch screws in his back so it would not hurt anymore. It worked for a while, but what he did not get told was that once those bones do not move anymore the other areas get overused and wear out prematurely.
Surgery is not a one and done fix. You must manage and maintain for the rest of your life. After his this patients first couple chiropractic treatments most of his pain and symptoms went away, this is the easy part. Now for the long term fix he MUST continue to treat his back better through stretching, exercising and lifting properly as well as regular spinal adjustments. If you know someone that has had a back surgery let them know they need to be seen to manage it or else it will come back. Back Surgeries like this start in Pocatello, Idaho at $150,000.00 and I had one patient that after his fourth back surgery the bill was $303,000.00.
Chiropractic and Chiropractors are trained to help keep you out of surgery but if you have had one you must still manage it OR it WILL manage you.
